My summer travel to Switzerland. Montreux.

Montreux became to me one of such favorite places I’d been there last summer. Montreux is located in southwestern Switzerland on Lake Geneva, 90 km (56 miles) from Geneva. There are number remarkable places in the city. Surrounded by the white tops of the mountains and the soft waves of Lake Geneva, Chillon Castle is a real beauty spot. The Castle stoned me with it’s greatness and beauty.
It is built on a rocky island along the antique road to Italy, consists of 25 building units. The oldest part dates back to the first millennium. In the 13th century under count Peter II of Savoy, Chillon was completely transformed and considerably enlarged with keeping Roman and early gothic architecture characteristic. Chillon Castle is the most famous castle in Switzerland.
Lord Byron visited the chateau and later wrote the poem ‘Prisoner of Chillon’ (1816) about the fate of François de Bonivard (1493-1570). Bonivard was the castle’s most famous prisoner, incarcerated between 1530 and 1536 for trying to bring Protestantism to Switzerland. The castle was once an important medieval fort, strategically located on an island to guard against invasion.
Today Chillon Castle is center of very interesting museums and wellknown place of various musical festivals. I had very saturate cultural program in Montreux and I spent such wonderful time that want to be back. By the way the shopping was also great!
