Saint-Nicolas one more small town on the sea-shore. Here we managed to walk by ourselves a little. In the gap between houses there is a view on the lake below with boats and a lot of cafes on the shore.
Spinalonga is an island, where walls and inner rooms of an ancient Venetian fortress that was an asylum for leprosy-sick people at the beginning of XX-th century, are rather well preserved.
On the first evening we watched storm-clouds and lightning’s over the sea and enjoyed it a lot – we had missed the rain during our long summer and even were not displeased with the fact that we could not bathe in numerous basins of the hotel. To say the truth, we did bathe in a closed basin, but we were the only ones who dared it. The other tourists looked at us with surprise as the water was at least 15-16 degrees.
Iraklion is the capital of Crete. There was nothing extraordinary in it. A small town with a lot of souvenir shops and rather crowded built centre – everything meant to make money on tourists. It is very green.
Excavations of an ancient town of Knossos according to historians’ suggestions a well-known palace-labyrinth of king Minos built about 4 thousand years ago was here.
Airport in Crete is situated very close to the sea-shore.
Looking from aside you see that the airplane begins descending still being above the sea and hardly the earth appears the landing line begins.
We flied only for an hour and were surprised with the weather change: from 30 degrees C. to cool rainy amiable weather.
It takes about 40 minutes to get to hotel from the airport. Apartments for tourists are on the terraces on different levels, several rooms on one level. Staircases, large ancient-looking jars, beautiful flower-beds of rich and various colors – all in harmony and disposes to care-free rest.
Our friends, at whose house we were staying, took us to Brooklin. Ocean embankment is clad with wooden boards. A lot of cafes with Russian-speaking waitresses, inviting you to drop in their place. A lot of typical Russian shops with a standard set of goods: caviar, rye bread, spiced sprats and of course, vodka.
We approached the house of Rebe of Lubavitch, looked at the door-plate and realised the sanctity of this place to jews of Hasid branch.
It is interesting to mention, that neighboring to the region, where a lot of men wear black garments and typical Hasid hats, there is a Negro quarter, and the neighborhood is peaceful enough on the opinion of local residents.
We spent not many days in New York and certainly, there remained many things we didn’t see, so, if there will be an occasion to visit it once more, we will be glad to do it.
We came back ashore in the dusk and hurried to mount one of the “Twin Towers”. Yes, we managed to take photographs of the circle panorama of New York from the landing of the Twins! Brookline bridge with its lights, the city on both sides of Hudson bay. The cars penetrate the darkness with their moving lights. The view from the height is very impressing. You feel the greatness and might of the city. On one of the days we go to Metropolitan museum. Truly to say there wasn’t something much to remember. A big fine building, of several stories. The staircase – that’s what comes to my mind. But works of artists I don’t remember. On the contrary, visiting the modern art museum impressed more, but negatively. The architecture is very peculiar. The building reminds a giant sea-shell. At that moment an exhibition of some artist (I don’t remember his name) took place. There were pictures of genitals in various views, horrible enough. Two refined old women near one of these horrible pictures spoke admiringly: “How beautiful!”
May be, we are not experts of modern art. We walked in the streets and took photos. We were watching young clowns in a small square in Grin witch Village. A crowd with little children gathered around. At some distance a group of young men sang with guitar accompaniment.
China quarter was crowded and full of people just like it is shown in pictures.
The way to USA from Europe is rather long. You fly 12 hours with a transfer in some European airport. And when the ticket is cheap and the rows of armchairs in the plane stand so tight, that you can hardly straighten your legs, so the flight is tiresome enough. The change in the time zone also counts. Thus it is no good to fly to USA for a short time. Just when your body is at last ready to function in new hours, it is time to return and again you will fall asleep by day and be awake at night.
Nevertheless considering all discomfort, the greatness of New York and the fact that it is so unlike Europe impresses you from the first moment. The huge buildings, the long streets. In fact, they are not wide enough to escape traffic jams at rush-hours. Funny yellow-sided taxies appear to look old-fashioned.
A lot of small shops in the streets, selling cheap triffles. Large department stores also remind of their presence with huge advertisement posters, especially noticeable by night.
Manhattan, Central Park – fearless squirrels jump quite near my feet and I can take photos without problems. Wall street – the famous sculpture of the bull. We come to embankment from where tourist boats put out, taking curious newcomers to stare at Freedom Statue and at the island, where first immigrants were received long ago. We see scores of photos on the stands of Emigration Museum. November isn’t the warmest month of the year, especially in America. We try to hide what can be hidden in scarf’s and collars. But it’s a pity not to look around and take photos! The art is worth sacrifices and we take off the gloves and set up the old camera with frozen fingers – at that time we weren’t happy owners of digital camera.
